Changing on the Fly

The Unprecedented Demands Adaptation

The past month has brought an immense amount of unexpected change to all of our lives.

The spread of the Covid-19 virus across the globe has caught us all off guard and created enormous and immediate change in how we live our lives. Though not welcome, these are all changes that we have had to adapt to quickly, and with little preparation. These are not small changes, but rather, big ones, encompassing how we live our lives.

Despite the now ever-changing landscape of our world penning us in our homes and away from our schools and places of work for the foreseeable future, it is important we pay attention to the guidelines and instructions being put forth by our national health institutions and healthcare workers (our heroes) to keep our loved ones safe and healthy.

As an organization devoted to supporting the improvement of qualify of life for people living with Type 1 Diabetes, Dskate is first and foremost primarily concerned with keeping all of our Dskate family and friends safe. We hope that you are taking care of yourselves and that you are safe at home.

With an emphasis on increased risk for those with compromised immune systems, it is important to remember to take as many precautions as possible to make sure that those living with T1D, and all others living with a compromised immune system, remain our priority. The conditions of quarantine and self-isolation are extremely important in affording everyone the opportunity to stay healthy and avoid further spread of this dangerous virus.

At the bottom of this article, we have gathered a list of important T1D-related links (US/Canada) for Covid-19 Coronavirus updates. We hope it will help guide you to the information you need during this difficult time.

Send Love

To our many, many healthcare workers who are a part of our Dskate family, and to all other medical professionals, we are humbled by your incredible service, care and hard work in the face of this emergency. We are forever grateful for the support you provide during our times together, but we are also well aware that you are now on the front lines, defending and keeping us all safe.

Thank you.

If you have the chance to show some support to all of the wonderful nurses, doctors, medical professionals and essential service workers, whether you know them or not, please do.

Dskate Events + Programs

As a result of the evolving changes related to Covid-19, Dskate is taking all necessary precautions to ensure that we can move forward with all of our events in 2020.

Despite this, and with many events, traditional and new programs slated to take place this year, we are now forced to pause our events until further notice.

Please understand that this does not mean the cancellation of events or programs, only the potential of postponing to a later date.

Dskate Hockey Spring Classic - POSTPONED

At this time, Dskate must unfortunately postpone the Dskate Hockey Spring Classic (May 22-24,2020).

Working with the University of Ottawa to coordinate this event, we waited through March to make the appropriate decision. Accordingly, and as mandated by the Univeristy of Ottawa, all facilities will be closed until May 15, 2020 at the earliest, with a high probability of being extended in to June and beyond.

As a result of this, plus the many government and travel-related restrictions, not to mention the simple safety and health of our staff, players and families, we will postpone the Dskate Hockey Spring Classic until further notice/update.

We will be in contact with all registered players and families in the coming weeks.

Dskate Toronto 2020 - CONFIRMED pending update

Our marquee program, the Dskate Toronto 2020 Program, scheduled for July 27-31, 2020, at the Ford Performance Centre in Etobicoke, Ontario, has not yet been impacted by the current parameters of quarantines and bans.

But we do not expect this to last.

With dates continuously being pushed further and further back, coupled with an undetermined update from our partners at the Ford Performance Centre, Dskate will wait to see how things progress over the following 6 weeks before we consider the option of postponing Dskate Toronto.

Dskate London 2020 - CONFIRMED pending update

A new addition to our slate of programs, Dskate London 2020, set to take place from August 3-7, 2020 at Western University in London, Ontario, is in the same position as our Dskate Toronto Program.

Working with Western University, the plans still remain to host the Dskate London 2020 program, pending further updates or changes in our situation.

Dskate World Diabetes Day Hockey Classic - CONFIRMED pending update

The second annual Dskate WDD Hockey Classic is set to take place this November 13-15, 2020.

Tentatively scheduled to return to the Canlan Sports Facilty in York, Ontario, there is currently no plan to change these dates. Registration will open in the coming months, once we have a clearer sense of all timelines and abilities for hosting large events/gatherings.

Looking Ahead

Despite our best efforts to maintain a steady course with our plans for Dskate this year, we will continue to react according to all of the guidelines and restrictions imposed, and to do our part in making sure we all can get back to a normal routine as soon as possible.

It is understandable that things will remain uncertain for an extended period of time, but as operations resume, we expect to return to normal once the partners and facilities we work with are able to welcome us once again.

In the meantime, we will not remain idle as we plan to continue to bring our Dskate Family together in new and dynamic ways.

As always, we sincerely appreciate all of your support and remain at your side, ready to hit the ice with you as soon as we all get the green light.

While we wait, please stay safe and take care of yourself and your loved ones.
